Book review by Martine House:
'Treasures Underfoot'
by Shirley McGregor

Two years after she published 'Quilting with Manhole Cover', Shirley McGregor just released her new book, 'Treasures Underfoot'. In the same format as the first book, with exquisite photography, short informative texts about the different cities of Japan represented and a brief account from each artist about their experience creating the quilts, 'Treasures Underfoot' takes us on a journey in an unexpected and beautiful world.

It is amazing how many different styles of designs are represented: from purely geometric to representative of Japanese scenes. And how unexpected too to find such artistry in such down to earth items! The small iron works of art have been interpreted into soft fabric panels by 40 international artists. Each artist had the freedom to use the design assigned to her as she wished. Some stayed pretty close to the original graphics. Some used the design as the basis to create an entirely new image. 'Treasures Underfoot' is absolutely a joy to look at, bringing about the rich colors, designs and feelings of the Orient. The heavy glossy paper, the high quality of the graphics and photography and page setting make this book a truly worthwhile addition to any art book collection.

For fabric artists and quilters, it is a unique source of inspiration. Designs are shown interpreted in fabric, computer color version and just as a black and white sketch, giving each reader the freedom to create her or his own interpretation. The quilts in 'Treasures Underfoot' will be touring for the next two years. Shirley says "These quilts are a wonderful addition to a guild's yearly show. The quilts are touring free of charge except shipping cost."
