| An instant is all it takes for someone, moving, breathing, intimately linked with one's environment, to be alive then dead. I cannot grasp that one instant. Just as when I try to picture the universe, my mind comes to a blank in front of the enormity of it all. I cannot comprehend how that instant happens so easily, so quickly and so irrevocably, how a heartbeat becomes a straight line for eternity. Are my sons, when they drive about or enjoy various activities that fill their lives, aware of how easily that instant can come about and how final it is? |
